The USDA food pyramid, called My Pyramid, recommends whole-grain foods, but why? Because the plant nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber in whole grain work together to help keep you healthy.

To make whole grains part of every day, use whole-wheat bread on sandwiches, try brown rice, and serve oatmeal and other whole-grain cereals. You also can check product labels to be sure you’re child is getting whole grains.

Here are some ingredients to look for:

  • whole wheat
  • whole oats/oatmeal
  • whole-grain corn
  • whole rye
  • graham flour
  • brown rice
  • wild rice
  • buckwheat
  • cracked wheat (also called bulgur)
  • millet
  • popcorn
  • quinoa
  • whole barley
  • whole cornmeal

Tips from real parents:
My kids prefer the blander flavors of white flour and white rice, so I disguise them. I mix in half brown rice, half white rice. I also mix regular pancake mix with buckwheat mix. They haven’t turned their noses up yet.

Cheerios story

“In my family, we've started a tradition called BFD... or Breakfast for Dinner. Funny how the same food served when the sun is setting instead of rising is given a whole new respect.”
