It’s easy to pack more nutrition into your child’s lunch. By making a few substitutions, you can give your child more essential vitamins and minerals while lowering the fat and calories. Involve your child in the process, too. It’s a good opportunity to discuss nutrition and helps kids feel in charge of their own lunch.

  • For sandwiches, choose lower-fat deli meats such as turkey, and whole-grain breads instead of white.
  • On the side, limit the fried snacks and offer baked chips, pretzels, or air-popped popcorn. Better still, add some cut-up veggies with a dip.
  • Include a piece of fresh fruit or fruit packed in natural juices.
  • Pack milk, water, or 100% juice instead of fruit drinks or soda.

Tips from real parents:
My daughter loves homemade soups ¾ so we make them and freeze them in smaller quantities. She takes them or wheat pita sandwiches to school with fruit and/or gelatine, yogurt, and sugar-free pudding.

Cheerios story

“In my family, we've started a tradition called BFD... or Breakfast for Dinner. Funny how the same food served when the sun is setting instead of rising is given a whole new respect.”
