Key nutrition messages for children ages 6-11 years
<<Back to eating right

The latest food pyramid from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, called MyPyramid, is also available for kids. Key nutrition messages for children ages 6-11 years are similar in “MyPyramid for Kids” as for adults, with an overall theme of encouraging children to be physically active, to make healthy food choices, and to have fun. Keep in mind that children generally need fewer calories than adults to maintain healthy growth. The main points for children are to:

  • Be physically active every day.
  • Choose healthier foods from each group.
  • Eat more from some food groups than others.
  • Eat foods from every color of the pyramid every day.
  • Take one step at a time—make slow, steady changes.
  • Make choices that are right for you.

To help children learn about healthy food choices, children may visit the interactive computer game, “MyPyramid Blast Off Game.” Here kids learn how to reach Planet Power by fueling their rocket with food and physical activity. “Fuel” tanks for each food group help children keep track of how their choices fit into MyPyramid.

Cheerios story

“In my family, we've started a tradition called BFD... or Breakfast for Dinner. Funny how the same food served when the sun is setting instead of rising is given a whole new respect.”
