Traveling with kids
<<Back to Ready for Life

Think of a vacation from a young child’s point of view: One day you’re going to preschool, eating your usual foods, coming home to your house, following your normal bedtime routine, and then settling down for a good night’s rest in your familiar bed. The next day, you’re stuck in the car for a long ride, eating strange food on the road, off of your normal nap schedule, and spending the night in some tall building with elevators and a pool. What’s going on?

Vacations can throw young kids for a loop and cause crankiness and meltdowns. But if your child knows what to expect, he or she will be a happier traveler. Here’s how to keep kids in a relaxed, positive mood:

  • Talk with your child during the planning stages of your trip. Explain where you’ll be going and how soon you’ll be leaving.
  • As you hit the road, remind your child where you’re headed.
  • When you reach your destination, let your child know what’s coming next. “Today, we’re going to the zoo, then we’ll have lunch, and then we’re going to find shells on the beach.”
  • Invite younger kids to imagine and predict the day’s activities with you. “What do you think we’ll see at the zoo?” Give your child status reports to orient him or her. “We’re leaving the zoo, so lunch is next and then the beach.”
  • At the end of each day of your trip, talk things over and ask your child’s opinion. What was his or her favorite activity? Evening is also a great time to let your child know what’s on tap for tomorrow.

Tips from real parents
To keep my kids busy while I pack, I give them each a tote bag or backpack and tell them to put in a few important items they want to take on our trip.
