connecting through laughter
<<Back to Ready for Life

Kids develop a sense of humor at home. And laughing together is one of the best ways to spend family time. Even if you don’t feel like a natural comedian, you can still teach your child to appreciate a good joke.

Here’s how:

  • Watch funny movies. Afterward, try to remember the parts that made you laugh.
  • Sing silly songs. There’s a big selection of amusing kids’ music from classics like “John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt” to newer songs, such as “My Brother Ricky’s for Sale.”
  • Read funny books. Some of the best include “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” and “Bark, George.”
  • Laugh at yourself. If you trip up the steps or say “peas” instead of “please,” be willing to make light of your small mistakes. It will help your child learn to forgive his or her small foibles.

Tips from real parents
One way we bring a sense of humor to our daily life is by being willing to laugh at ourselves. For instance, when I asked for someone to pass the "blutter" instead of butter, my kids found that very amusing.
