<<Back to Being Active

Sometimes it seems like every kid in the neighborhood plays soccer, but not all kids will like or excel at team sports. It helps if you understand your child’s fitness personality. A lot of kids are casual athletes – they may like certain activities, but they don’t want to compete or train with a team.

As a parent, the trick is to encourage your child’s interests without pushing too hard. Here’s how to do it:

  • Let your child know he or she needs to be active, but that there’s a long list of possibilities. Then support your child as he or she tries different sports and activities.
  • Some kids like a sport but are discouraged because they are not as skilled as their teammates. If that sounds like your child, look for clinics he or she could attend and encourage continued practice.
  • If competition turns your child off, look for noncompetitive leagues and clubs. Talk with coaches and other parents about what that league or club is like.

Tips from real parents:
My son spends hours at our local skateboard park. When he is not there, he makes ramps out of wood and jumps them on the sidewalk in front of our house.
