<<Back to Being Active

With so much going on, it can be hard to fit in exercise and physical activity. Help motivate your family to be more active by using a family goal chart.

Here’s how to get started:

  • Click on the Healthy Habits Chart link below to get a blank chart, or create your own.
  • Have a family meeting to talk about what the goals are. Explain that being active doesn’t need to be boring, like running in place or doing sit-ups. And talk about how the kids and adults can earn checkmarks or stickers for each day.
  • Post the chart in a visible spot, like the refrigerator, and be sure to celebrate those who met their goal each week and give encouragement to anyone who fell short. And when all family members have met their goals for the week, mark the occasion by doing something fun together, like going mini-golfing.

Tips from real parents:
We don't make a big deal out of exercise. Usually, what happens is that we'll decide to kick around a soccer ball after dinner or ride bikes on a Sunday afternoon. As far as our children are concerned, exercise is just fun movement. The reality is that my husband and I will secretly plan things in advance and think about ways to make fitness fun, but our children don't realize that they are part of a plan.
