Welcome kids in the kitchen. Here are some tips for involving your kids!
<<Back to eating right

Kids love the kitchen, and why not? There’s a lot to learn in there. Even younger children can be given safe kitchen tasks and take part in creating a meal. Older kids may want to take it a step further and do some of the measuring and mixing. It’s a great chance to be together and get a hands-on lesson about food.

Here are some tips for involving your kids:

  • Carve out some time: Having children in the kitchen can be great fun, but you’ll need a little extra time to give them instructions and supervise their work. Getting another adult involved can help keep things under control.
  • Give tasks that are right for a child’s age: Even very young kids can play with spoons and empty pots and pretend to cook alongside you. Toddlers might like a chance to help pour ingredients into a bowl. Preschoolers may be able to hop up on a step stool and be your assistant. And older kids might want to plan menus and learn how to crack eggs and do other kitchen tasks.

Tips from real parents:
When I'm baking with my 7-year-old, I put all the ingredients on the counter. Then I give my son the recipe and he double-checks that we have everything we need.

Cheerios story

“In my family, we've started a tradition called BFD... or Breakfast for Dinner. Funny how the same food served when the sun is setting instead of rising is given a whole new respect.”
