making family meals a reality
<<Back to eating right

Family meals are making a comeback. That’s good news because meals served at home are generally healthier.

But family meals have an added benefit: They’re a time for busy families to slow down and stay in touch. Hectic schedules can make it a challenge to arrange family meals, so try these strategies for fitting them in - and for making the most of the moments:

  • Check the calendar: Check everyone’s schedule so you choose days when the whole family can be there.
  • Plan: Decide what you’ll be serving and have the ingredients on hand so you’re ready to start cooking.
  • Make it a team effort: Let kids help with the final prep. Whether it’s putting plates on the table, tossing the salad, pouring a beverage, folding the napkins, being a “taster,” or just keeping the cook company, having a role lets kids know their contributions count – and lets them feel part of the family activity.
  • Give yourself a break: The typical family isn’t sitting down to home-cooked dinners every night at 6:00 sharp, so don’t worry if you’re not either.

Having a weekend brunch together or saving time by serving a family meal of take-out pizza and a salad. If everyone gets to the table and you get a chance to reconnect, you’ve accomplished something.

Tips from real parents:
It's important for us to sit down together for family dinner. So even with a crazy schedule, we manage to eat together most nights, even though it is usually at 8:30 p.m.

Cheerios story

“In my family, we've started a tradition called BFD... or Breakfast for Dinner. Funny how the same food served when the sun is setting instead of rising is given a whole new respect.”
