Parents often wonder how they can encourage their kids to eat a variety of foods. Food preferences start to develop in infancy, but can be steered in new directions as a child grows older.

Kids need to be exposed to a variety of new tastes, and you may need to offer a food on 10 to 15 occasions before they take to something new. So if at first you don’t succeed with the green beans, try, try again!

Here are some additional ways to develop your child’s palate so he or she eats a wider range of healthy foods:

  • Eat well yourself, especially during family meals, and show your child that you enjoy a wide array of foods.
  • Get kids involved by taking them to the market and inviting them to help you in the kitchen when preparing foods.
  • Avoid power struggles over food. You get to decide what foods your child can choose from. Your child gets to decide when to eat (and not eat) and how much to eat.

Tips from real parents
I try to cook well-rounded meals and we rarely eat fast food. I don't keep soda or junk food in the house either, but nothing is off limits. I just try to teach them to eat some things in moderation.

Cheerios story

“In my family, we've started a tradition called BFD... or Breakfast for Dinner. Funny how the same food served when the sun is setting instead of rising is given a whole new respect.”
