Women and heart disease: Getting better, getting the family involved

There's no easy way to change daily routines, whether that means making healthier foods or getting more exercise, without it having some impact on family dynamics. It can be a very positive impact: one family member's efforts to reduce the risk of heart disease can benefit everyone.

Kids and change

While kids can be especially resistant to changes in routine, grownups' sense of enthusiasm can be infectious. By watching, kids will learn attitudes that will guide them for the rest of their lives.

Physical activity with the kids

Small children may be prone to wander off during long stretches of repetitive aerobic exercises. A good game of tag in the back yard or a race around the house can coax kids into getting active.

Kids and a heart-healthy diet

If they're given a choice, most kids will pick a fatty, sugar-rich snack over fruits and vegetables. But it's surprising how quickly their palates adapt to new tastes. You can start by weeding junk food out of the house so it's less available. Slowly substituting fresh fruits, juices and low-fat yogurt for snack time can lead to lasting change. If you make that switch successfully, try adding other good things to the mix: raw carrot sticks, quickly cooked broccoli and cauliflower with a yogurt dip, or either raw or toasted nuts. Kids love to help shop when they feel included and entrusted with some grownup decisions. Having them pick out colorful and interesting fruits during shared time at the grocery store can be as fun as a candy store.

Quitting smoking

It's surprising how receptive kids can be to facts about the dangers of smoking, and how supportive they can be of a parent's intention to quit. Kids' attention to their mother's, aunt's or grandmother's progress may make it easier for adults to stick to a plan.
